Character Personality:
How People Perceive Him/Weaknesses
When we're first introduced to Yuugi he appears to be nothing more than a gutless, loud-mouthed child who has an intense interest in games. He's shy, somewhat timid, and diminutive. Yuugi is the kind of kid people pick last for their team because his lack of skill at sports will just make them lose. (In fact he doesn't appear to be good at anything but games, and is even a poor student academically. On the national exam test his number comes in at the low 300's. However, this isn't because he's stupid or doesn't necessarily get the material, but rather that he chooses not to apply himself.)
He tends to avoid confrontation and says that he dislikes violence, hence why when bullies pick on him he doesn't fight back. Instead, he tries to reason with them, or pleads with them, neither of which seem to work without a second party stepping in because he's far too gentle even when he's being urgent and perhaps even easy to ignore. As a result, he gets beat up, verbally abused, gets his things stolen, and sometimes pressured into doing things he doesn't want to do. A lot. In fact, aside from his childhood friend Anzu, he's often ridiculed and belittled by his peers as being "wimpy". Jonouchi, another classmate of his, calls him "girly" when Yuugi shows him a puzzle box he brings to school and takes it from him, telling him that he's too soft and he wants to make him a man. Jonouchi even secretly steals a piece of the puzzle because guys like Yugi "pissed him off" and the way he focused on games "made him sick". He is in a word: "bully bait", an easy target odd enough to attract their attention, especially because of how he throws himself into his hobbies and isn't very sociable.
In fact the one frustration that Yuugi has is that people either underestimate him or often mistake him for being in elementary school due to his child-like appearance. (It's even often the brunt end of more than a few fandom jokes). But really he wants to be the friend people turn to, and seen as reliable. He wants Anzu to like him, he wants Jonouchi to think he's strong, or just the kind of person people want to be friends with in general. He's afraid of abandonment, as well. (As when Yuugi discovered there was "Another Yuugi" aka the Dark spirit inside him, he didn't want to tell his friends about it because he was afraid they'd leave him.)
What He's Really Like/Strengths and Friendship
Yuugi might even be seen as naive, as he's incredibly easy to lie to, and easily trusting. However, these traits are in fact not what make up the heart of his character. They are misleading as to what he's really like, as his friends and those close to him can attest to.
While by himself Yuugi doesn't appear to be much, his friends give him courage, and help him find inner strength. When he's about to give up and blamed himself for getting his friends involved during Death-T when they were stuck in a room (the Kaibaland death theme park Kaiba created in hopes of killing Yuugi and his friends) Jonouchi steps in and yells some sense into him, making him realize that giving up is never the answer. His friends support him, but that shouldn't come as a surprise given that friendship is very important to Yuugi, who grew up alone in his early years. They're at the heart and depth of everything that he does, and once he made someone his friend they're hardly if ever seen apart.
Yuugi is also incredibly persistent. At the beginning of the manga he tells Anzu that the Puzzle was something that his grandfather gave him and that he'd spent over eight years trying to solve it because he believed he'd get his wish upon its completion. This wish, he reveals to her in confidence, was only that he really wanted some true friends.
He's incredibly forgiving, even to a fault. No matter how he's wronged if there's even a chance someone can be redeemed then he'll accept them, and even consider them a friend. We see this over and over again; Despite situations where you would think any normal individual would hate the person in question Yuugi forgives and forgets. Jonouchi and Honda bullied him but he was still willing to call them "his friends" and defend them. Kaiba constructs an amusement park for the sole purpose of killing him and his friends, nearly kills his grandfather, and does a host of other unforgivable things and yet he still had initially trusted him. He's all about second chances and all-too-willing to offer his friendship to anyone, even if they're not necessarily the best person. He sees the good in others, and is more than willing to overlook a person's bad traits in favor of their good ones. This unwavering belief in others and constant optimism makes it easy for him to bounce back, and proves to be partly why he's so resilient even when grossly wronged.
Early on in the manga when Kaiba switched his grandfather's Blue-Eyes-White-Dragon card with a fake, he didn't say anything initially but to Kaiba's amazement he later confronts him and asks him to give it back, saying that he'd "hoped Kaiba would return it on his own" even though Kaiba thought he hadn't noticed. He trusted Kaiba, even though he knew there was a risk involved in doing so. And as time goes on even though he does learn to have a small distrust of those with evil intentions, he never regards them hatefully. Even though many people look down on him for it or he never fully gives up on someone.
He's pure-hearted, but far from being stupid. Even Shadi, the Egyptian man who curses those who disturb the Valley of the Kings, and who tried everything he could to bring out Yuugi's other self by inflicting terrible things upon him and his friends, noted that Yuugi himself was a boy who had a soul of innocence and purity who was "without a single wicked thought". Yuugi might not appear to be the most courageous person on the surface, but he's full of vibrant passion, is genuine and sincere, and has a heart of gold.
However, this doesn't mean he's entirely without the urges boys his age get. Yuugi is indeed a teenage boy, and there are several occasions where he acts like a rather typical one. It is well-known that Yuugi has a crush on his childhood friend Anzu, and that he has in fact showed himself to be protective and even jealous over others who tried to hit on her or steal away her attentions. He blushes a lot around her on several notable occasions, as when he sees her in her Burger World uniform and when they go to an amusement park for a "date" and he sees her "dynamic hot body". There's even a part in the manga where Jonouchi is shown sharing a pornography tape with Yuugi, which goes to show that although he can be timid and shy or incredibly blushy about that kind of stuff he still is just a normal boy.
Despite his complexities he has normal if not simple needs, and urges. In fact it doesn't take much to make him happy. Many people might even see him as a little "happy-go-lucky", though it's more that at his heart, his basic, most fundamental need besides eating hamburgers and playing strategy games, is that Yuugi just really wants everything to be in harmony and therefore wants those around him to be happy. Hence why he's willing to go to almost any length to help them. Unfortunately achieving that isn't always very simple.
The Importance of the Puzzle to his Character
Yuugi is extremely attached to the Millennium Puzzle. Even without the presence of the Other Yuugi inside of it (as initially he had no idea the presence was even there), he still regards it as his most precious treasure and is always seen wearing it no matter the occasion. In a way it's a symbol of his friendship with Jonouchi, Honda, and Anzu, but also can be seen as the catalyst to his struggle to overcome his weaknesses if not his "coming of age" journey. The connections he makes is usually by merit of having the puzzle, and it has gotten him through some hard times as both a physical reminder of the bonds he shares with others as well as a symbolic one.
He becomes very distressed without it, and has on more than one occasion almost died for it. His best friend Jonouchi has helped him get it back on more than one occasion, including a time in the arc when they go to the local arcade to try out a new fighting game; Yuugi beat his opponent each time he was challenged. The challenger turned out to be a street fighter who became enraged and when Jonouchi left Yuugi alone to get him a drink the street brawler beat Yuugi up and took his Millennium Puzzle. Jonouchi then challenged him to a "One-Inch" fight with the arcade brawler in order to win the puzzle back. The idea was to balance a blade in between your teeth and the first person to be hit in the face would lose since it would then be lodged in the back of their throat. Despite the danger involved Jonouchi was willing to keep that promise to his friend. The extreme lengths that Jonouchi was willing to go through for Yuugi show just how important the puzzle is, not only to Yuugi but in a way to his friends too.
Through the puzzle he inadvertently got the wish that he wanted: "true friends". However, as he fit in that last piece his life changed forever. The Puzzle box had an inscription that read "the one who solves this puzzle will gain my dark knowledge and power". Yuugi gained just that: He became not only Guardian of the Shadow Games, but also a vessel to the spirit of a 3,000 year old "Pharaoh". Yuugi was at first unaware of this "Other Yuugi/Dark Yuugi's presence", but later came to work with him as a partner (though at his canonpoint he acknowledges the presence he is afraid of it). From then on he would have periods where he blacked out, and where strange if not magnificent things would happen. The Other Yuugi would protect him, and correct injustices done to those precious to Yuugi. It has saved his life many times.
This is important to Yuugi the normal boy because not only does the Puzzle/the spirit inside it help him become a stronger person, but he also overcomes many obstacles in his life. He learns how to stand on his own two feet in addition to simply being good at games. Through the many trials he faces he gains his own form of courage that can never be destroyed, and a sense of pride in his own accomplishments. Yuugi has even learned how to fall, and when things get tough how to still pick himself up again. He learned to have faith in himself as well as his friends, and with that confidence became the friend that his friends turn to for stability, even Mokuba and Seto Kaiba and even Atem himself. (Though we see this more later on in the manga, at the canonpoint he is currently at he is just starting to gain that confidence of his). He becomes the glue that holds everyone together, which is something the Puzzle itself does: It gives a person the power of unity, as the pieces of the Puzzle become one they strengthen like friends coming together. Thus, Yuugi I think, is the heart and soul of the group because of it.
Love of Games/Why it's Integral to his Character
Rather obviously, Yuugi is a nerd/obsessed with games. It's just the one thing that he's really, really good at. He likes to concern himself with little complicated things that take a lot of concentration, like models, cards, riddles, or puzzles. Before Duel Monsters came to the forefront he was shown playing many different kinds of games, from Digital Pets, Monster Fighters, to arcade games, to tabletop rpgs, and even the rarer Egyptian or Chinese games that came from different sides of the world from his grandpa's game shop or even from other classmates.
He's often put on the spot by others or challenged by others, but he is always happy to play with them. Yuugi has a healthy sense of friendly competition, but he's never boastful or unkind to others when he wins. Losing is also a pretty big deal, given that because games are one of the only things he cherishes completely and is passionate about, he prides himself on being able to play games with his own abilities. And yet, Yuugi still bounces back. He can take losing pretty hard, but not so hard that he'll never play a game ever again. Just like how he had to be persistent in solving the puzzle, he is willing to keep trying because otherwise he'd be a loser/there's something important at stake/or he wouldn't be able to go on. Yes, he needs a pep talk from his friends every now and then, but he's pretty good at never giving up on his own too.
Even on a purely superficial basis, Yuugi loves having the different challenges and strategies to deal with. Not only are they just "fun" for him, but they give him focus, and help him to think critically, or in a way that's "outside the box".
On a deeper level playing games have actually helped him through some rough times. To begin with, they're all he had before he made friends, so there's a lot of personal feeling behind playing games as well. They give him purpose, and really are so important to him that they can be considered a way of life in all the situations he faces. Completing the Millennium Puzzle gave him the friendship he always wanted, and other games give him a satisfaction/self-confidence he wouldn't otherwise have.
When it comes to the more serious games, whether it be to avoid death or to save a friend, Yuugi will put forth his all. When Yuugi was in Death-T's "Murder Mansion" and he was forced into solving a riddle or risking having everyone's hands cut off he had to think quickly, and tactfully. And yes, though Atem (the Dark Spirit) is usually there to get him out of a bind, or is what most people consider to be the grand champion or "King of Games", Yuugi himself isn't without skill. He even knows how to play mind games, and I think that says a lot about the boy Yuugi as a whole, given that while he's more quiet and shy than his dark counterpart who lives in the Puzzle, he still is very observant and mindful of other people and how they interact.
Games help him learn a lot and are a model for lessons in life and how to cope with many different situations that it presents, and ultimately, they've helped him grow into the person he is.

Character Abilities: While Yuugi himself is just a normal boy and doesn't have any "powers" to speak of, he's incredibly good at two things: making friends, and games. He's also really good at strategy and complex thinking, being something of a "gaming genius".
Yuugi also carries with him the Millennium Puzzle (see the subheading "Powers & Abilities"), whose powers, while not always so obvious, grant a single wish of the person who solved it and heighten its owner's chance of success in a game (depending on the importance/skill of/in the game being played).
There is one part that is mentioned in the manga when Jonouchi isn't seen at school/gets conned into hanging out with his old gang croonies and no one can find him that Yuugi asks the puzzle where Jonouchi is, and it gives him its location so it could be said that he can find people with it as well.
It does have the ability to initiate a Dark Game and the other Dark powers mentioned in the wiki but I don't think Yuugi himself without Dark Yuugi could utilize it. And even if he could he probably wouldn't be able to control it on his own, as his soul is "pure/light".
Character Inventory: One school uniform, the Millennium Puzzle (minus "Other Yuugi")
Samples: He'd awoken in the Arrival Center before now and even after the explanation he felt mostly lost and confused. Sadly Yuugi couldn't remember ever hearing of this place before. The locals may have been incredibly friendly but even they didn't seem to know where Domino City was.
Those few that might cross his path would note him to be a very short boy in a Japanese school uniform with a distinct head of multi-colored star-shaped hair and a high, almost child-like voice. After several comments of "are you lost little boy," Yuugi was starting to get a little miffed, it not frustrated. While he may not have looked it, he was actually in high school!
He was on the emptier side of the city, but quickly going towards any sign of life at all or approaching anyone who might look remotely hopeful, though sadly no one knew who any of his friends were or where they might have been.
"Jonouchi-kun...? Anzu-chan? Jii-chan? Hello?"
Worry skewed his innocent, boy-like face, and he clutched at his Millennium Puzzle as if it might give him courage. As long as he had the puzzle he could go it alone for now or maybe he'd make a friend along the way! While he had been hoping he'd find one of his friends already, as the locals said it was possible to find people that you knew, there was no way of telling right now.
He walked down the cobblestone path in old sneakers cautiously in his modern clothes, feeling quite out of place next to the older architecture. It reminded him of an old Egyptian museum exhibit he'd attended with his grandpa and his friends, or at least the dated appearance did. Or of the paintings he'd seen of feudal Japan before. In any case he was a bit lost. He passed through the narrow streets and crossed what looked to be a noodle shop, deciding that perhaps he could step inside and ask someone for directions.
Mostly though, he thought he could find someone who might be able to locate his friends, who he'd just been with not too long ago. Surely Jonouchi-kun, Honda-kun, and Anzu-chan couldn't be far! He had to believe in them, that they wouldn't leave him alone for too long.
